Each player has six different actions available to them during their turn:
♠️ Hit
You draw an additional card to increase your hand total. This can be done at any point.
♣️ Stand
You decide against taking another card, keeping your current hand total intact. This can also be done at any point.
♥️ Double Down
You can double your original bet and receive just one more card. Unlike traditional blackjack, in Spanish 21, you may double down regardless of how many cards you have.
♦️ Split
In the case where a player has two cards of identical rank, they can split their hand into two distinct hands. For instance, if they receive 8 and 8, they can split by doubling their initial bet. The dealer will separate the cards and add an extra card to each, allowing the player to play these as individual hands with all the same options available.
🃏 Surrender
If you find yourself in a less than ideal situation, such as a hard 16 facing a dealer's 9, you can choose to surrender your hand. This allows you to retrieve half of your bet in exchange for forfeiting any potential winnings. In Spanish 21 blackjack, you also have the option for late surrender, which means you can only take this action after the dealer has checked for a blackjack.
This game also includes the choice to surrender after doubling down, which is referred to as 'double down rescue.' In such cases, you reclaim half of your total wager but relinquish your chance of winning the hand.
🧐 Insurance
When the dealer's up card shows an ace, you may opt to place an insurance bet equal to half of your initial wager. Should the dealer reveal a blackjack, this insurance bet pays out at 2 to 1.
🤵 Match The Dealer
Certain variations of Spanish 21 may offer a side bet known as 'Match The Dealer.' Here, players attempt to match the rank of their first two cards with the dealer's visible card. Here's an example of a typical paytable for this side bet:
Matching Cards

Expert Note
Based on this paytable, the side bet carries a house edge of roughly 3%, making it better than many other blackjack side bets. However, different paytables can vary the casino’s edge, so always make sure to review them prior to playing.
